Settlement Programs At CultureLink

CultureLink is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting in the settlement of newcomers, facilitating their full participation in the diverse community of Metropolitan Toronto. Settlement is seen as a two-way process in which the host and newcomer communities adjust to each other. CultureLink offers various programs for newcomers and participants from the host community. These programs are outlined below:

Host Program:
CuIlureLink's flagship program, the one-on-one befriending program facilitates friendships between individual newcomers and volunteers from the host community. People are matche for 6 months to one year on the basis of gender, age and residential location. The new friends are expected to maintain weekly contact, and to meet at least twice per month for conversation and social interaction.

Government Sponsored Refugee Program:
Government Sponsored Refugees (AAP's) constitute one of CultureLink 's targeted constituencies. These individuals come from a variety of countries and are brought to Toronto by the Canadian government. After staying in reception centres during the weeks following their arrival, AAPs often need additional support once they relocate.
CultureLink provides on going support, referrals, counseling, programs, friends and social activities for this community. CultureLink also works closely with AAPs while they are at reception centres.

Volunteer Orientation and Training:
CultureLink provides orientation for volunteers and newcomers. Volunteer orientations prepare host community participants for participation in the program, and volunteer on-going training includes cross-cultural communication, anti-racism training and a general orientation to settlement services.

Newcomer orientation:
Newcomer orientations focus on providing useful information for newcomers to settle in Toronto which includes housing, health, education and settlement services and cross cultural communication skills. Starting in September 1997, CultureLink will offer an one-week orientation program for newcomers in order to help them access various services during the settlement process such as information on life skills, Canadian job market, community resources, housing, etc.

Computer Skills for Beginners:
The Computer Skills group offers comprehensive training to newcomers on CultureLink's computers and involves such programs as Windows 95, Microsoft Word and others. The program runs every Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00. There are three sessions each year in which each session lasts for approximately 10 weeks.

English Conversation Circle:
The ECC is a discussion group held to help newcomers improve their English skills in a social environment. It is held every Wednesday night, from 5:30-8:00 pm and has met with much success in the past. Each week brings a new topic and the chance to converse, providing newcomers and Canadian hosts opportunity to make new friends from all over the world.

Job Search Club:
The Job Search Club is a much needed service in the newcomer community. Locating information about employment and preparing a resume in a new country is a daunting experience. With the help of the Job Search Club, newcomers are provided with assistance to develop job search skills to meet new people. At the end of the program, participants may be placed in different placed in order to get their first Canadian work experience. The Job Search Club runs every Thursday from 6:00-8:00 pm. In June 1997, CultureLink will offer a resume clinic on a weekly basis where newcomers can prepare their personal resumes with the assistance of the volunteer or staff at
CultureLink.

Youth Programs:
CultureLink's Youth Program works with newcomer and Canadian-born youth to explore issues affecting this community. Activities include a series of self-esteem programs in schools, a Youth Popular Theatre Program, Anti-Racism and Immigration workshops, youth support groups and other educational activities

CultureLink Caterers:
CultureLink has started a multi-ethnic catering business, called
CultureLink Caterers. This business provides training and short-term employment for newcomers who have skills in food preparation, who respond to catering requests by providing appetizing meals and snacks from a variety of different countries. The catering services are offered to businesses, the community and non-governmental sectors as well we to the general public.

Supportive Activities:
In addition to the regular programs, special events and other activities are also offered. These activities generally provide opportunities for newcomers and volunteers from the host community to interact and learn more about each other. Typical events include social evenings for talking and dancing at least four a year. cultural shows, workshops related to issues related to newcomers and seasonal celebrations.
